The Media and Audiovisual Department fulfils the tasks of the Ministry as the central governmental body for the area of audiovision, radio and television broadcasting, press, and other information means.
In the segment entrusted to it, the Department in particular
- provides for the fulfilment of special tasks of the Ministry in the negotiation and performance of international agreements in the area of the media and in the area of audiovision, including participation in the bodies established by virtue of such agreements,
- participates in the representation of the Ministry and, where applicable, the Czech Republic in the activities and meetings of both national and international, governmental and non-governmental organisations dealing with the issue of media and audiovision,
- is in charge of the membership of the Czech Republic in the European Audiovisual Observatory,
- is in charge of the membership of the Czech Republic in the international Eurimages fund and the MEDIA programmes of the European Communities,
- plans and provides for the hosting of foreign exhibitions and sending exhibitions abroad in the area of mass media and audivision,
- is the unit of the Ministry in charge in relation to the Council for Radio and Television Broadcasting, the Czech Radio Council, the Czech Television Council, the Czech Press Agency Council, the Standing Commission of the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic for the News Media and the Standing Commission of the Senate of the Czech Parliament for the News Media
- observes the condition of the culture of mass media and audiovision,
- is responsible for the provision of funds from the State budget, in particular, by virtue of grants in the area of media and audiovision,
- keeps records of the publishers of periodicals and maintains an archive of compulsory copies of the recorded periodicals, including checking the correctness of the specified data,
- keeps records pursuant to Act No. 249/2006 Coll., amending Act No. 273/1993 Coll., on certain conditions of the production, dissemination and archiving of audiovisual works and on the amendment to certain laws and certain other regulations, as amended
- inspects the regional governmental bodies,
- plans and provides for the promotion of Czech audiovisual media at international festivals and similar events in the Czech Republic and abroad and organises Czech participation in such events,
- organises presentations of foreign cinematography in the Czech Republic.
