Activities of the Copyright Law Department

The Copyright Law Department of the Ministry of Culture evaluates the level of protection of copyrights and related rights and draws up appropriate legislative drafts, as well as other measures for protection of these rights pursuant to international conventions binding on the Czech Republic.

The Department is responsible for professional participation of the Czech Republic in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO/OMPI) and in conventions and treaties administered by this organization, as well as in the Treaty on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) concluded in the framework of agreements on the World Trade Organization (WTO) and in other international agreements.

The Department acts as a focal point for protection of copyrights and related rights in the framework of the information system for the protection of intellectual property developed pursuant to Resolution of the Government No. 330 of April 14, 1999, whereby the Government adopted the Concept for Combating Crime in the Area of Intellectual Property.

The Department grants authorization for performance of collective administration of rights pursuant to Act No. 121/2000 Coll., on copyright, rights related to copyright and amendment to some laws (the Copyright Act). Within the scope specified by the above-mentioned Act, it performs supervision over activities of collective administrators of rights and cooperates with them in the protection of rights of both Czech and foreign authors and other right-holders.

The Department keeps a list of intermediaries arranging collective agreements between users of the objects of protection under the Copyright Act and collective administrators of rights.
